STC Interview: Nathan Robinson of “Raise Up Roof Beams”
Nathan Robinson, singer-songwriter and guitarist from the U.S. east coast indie band Raise Up Roof Beams, articulates a a new ethic which prefers live performance and interaction over studio isolation, community building over elitism, and relational politics over slogans and diatribes.
The band, which takes its name from a J.D. Salinger novella (”Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters”), blends folk styles, punk sensibility, and literary lyrical allusions with the diverse strengths of the players’ musical prowess.
The line up is: Robinson: guitar/vocals/harmonica, Harrison Gordner: drums/percussion/marimba, Justin Arawjo: mandolin/banjo/lap steel/accordion/melodica/backup guitar, Alan Carroll: keyboards, Kelly Musser: upright bass/vocals. Live: They play venues around the northeast corridor from Washington , D.C. to Philadelphia, have also toured the Midwest and plan an extended Summer 2008 tour to support their upcoming release.

I happened to be listening to the World Cafe with David Dye on WXPN (in Philadelphia, PA) today in the car and heard the featured interview with the New York City band, Phonograph ( a repeat I hadn’t heard, actually recorded in August 2007). So, I’m thinking: Wilco…Uncle Tupelo…(very) early R.E.M.—but with these little electronic things happening.
Turns out the band has opened for Wilco, whose bassist, John Stirratt, is a big supporter. What I heard in the interview was something unique: a band which took a long established genre (alt-country) and added its own vibe and aesthetic to it to produce something very unique which needs to be heard, not described—so listen to the MP3, then go buy the new EP, Hiawatha Talking Machine from the website.

A Music Player for MP3 Surfers
Tags:mxplay, mp3 sites, music blogs
In the nearly two years we have been inundated with “Web 2.0″ everything (if you don’t know, think MySpace, LastFM, Pandora, etc.) dozens of music websites have launched with various takes on presenting a listening experience tied to ‘community’ (whatever that means)—I’ve tried them but most require more interaction than I care to provide.
Today I stumbled onto MXPlay, which also features a music sharing community aspect and a web browser plugin/player, BUT, with two not inconsiderable differences: the first being that the signup was very simple, requiring only first and last names, username, and password—voila! you’re in! The second was the real difference for me:
the player (which uses a plugin for IE and Firefox and also doubles as a handy, slim stand-alone player) allows you to click a “Play This Page” button on the MXPlay browser toolbar at any webpage with media files and load a play list with all the files on that page!
If you regularly visit music blogs and mp3 sites like I do, this player rules! Get it here. The site also has a page devoted to mp3 sites with some great places to visit such as Chrome Waves,Sound Roots, and Who Needs Radio? |Get MXPlay

The Dan Fogelberg Website
I grew up listening to Dan Fogelberg…in high school through my early adult years. Sure he was “pop”, but he had no category…he was Dan. With all the emotions that comprise a soundtrack to one’s life. I saw him a half dozen times over the years, including his first tour with the Eagles…to a magic night in Central Park…sun dropping over Manhattan, a single spot…a white piano…and the opening chords to “Netherlands.

“And in the passage from the cradle to the grave
We are born madly dancing
Rushing headlong through
the crashing of the days
We run on and on without a backward glance…The places dash and faces dart
Like fishes in a dream
Hiding ‘neath the murky banks
of long forgotten streams
The lines of life are never long
when seen from end to end
The future’s never coming
and the past has never been…”
-In The Passage”-The Innocent Age, 1981
This is my unabashed tribute to a friend… the reason why I picked up a guitar and wrote really bad lyrics in a spiral notebook. The reason why I never lost the wounded romantic inside…and why I can smile, sing along, and cry…good bye, Dan!
This showed up in my GMail today:
Violin like u’ve never heard before (and probably wont want to hear again lol) I’m just makin it up as I go along so really just a whole load of rubish but was a bit of fun anyway. Hope ya enjoy.
My apologizes go out to thoes who would appreciate it if I put a shirt on. Its another hot day here in australia.
I forgot to flip the vid so its back to front… sorry.
Awesome chops from this D.I.Y. studio guy named Retaw (uhh—-that’s Water spelled backwards, right?). Exactly what I needed to see on this otherwise stressed out Monday. From stressed to blessed. Thanks Dude!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Remembering the good things of life—like a good belly laugh and some vintage audio from one of the truly great TV shows of the late 1970’s: WKRP In Cincinnati. Some Turkey Day levity to kick off the show—and blocks of music from around the net.

Anguish over the future of the podcast….is it a talk show? Is it a music show…? More great independent music (maybe it’s a music-talk show?…)
Are there a lot of guys named “Ron” in this show?
Whatever, it must go on!

Check out: “Ronnie: The Autobiography”
from St. Martin’s Press
My Space: http://www.myspace.com/ronniewoodofficial
Ronnie Wood lived in the cauldron of sixties and seventies British rock. He has been a member of the Rolling Stones for over thirty years. His other bands include The Birds, The Creation, The Jeff Beck Group, The Small Faces, and The Faces. A fascinating portrait not just of the Stones, but of the greatest rockers of the 1960’s and beyond—from Eric Clapton to Rod Stewart, Jimmy Page to Keith Moon, Jimi Hendrix to Pete Townshend—RONNIE is a rich, revelatory book. Readers have never had a view of the rock world like this before.
The book can be pre-ordered from all major online book sites and will be available on store shelves on October 30th from St. Martin’s Press.
Amazon.com
OK—that’s the plug—you decide! Personally, I love Ronnie’s dirty slide guitar and rough vocals and when I think of him I think of the Faces and especially the late Ronnie Lane, bassist for the Small Faces/Faces and a musical side-kick of Pete Townshend.
I get to play a song from a long buried gem of an LP, “Mahoney’s Last Stand (1976)” called “Car Radio”.
Adam Curry’s interview with Presidential candidate Ron Paul (Daily Source Code #677) stands as one of the best
(brief) presentations of Pauls’s views I have heard to date. Sharp questions from Adam, thoughtful, well-reasoned and consistent answers from Paul. I am a political skeptic and am not supporting or promoting Ron Paul, or any other politician—but this stuff matters! And it NEEDS to be heard:

Are record labels dead?
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Prince freed himself from record labels years ago. Paul McCartney, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have followed. Now the Material Girl appears to be kissing her big-name record company goodbye for a cool $120 million. is expected to sign a recording deal with entertainment producer Live Nation.U2 be next? Justin Timberlake? Coldplay? Do superstars even need traditional multiyear album contracts when CD sales are plummeting and fans are swiping tons of music for free online, or tuning in to their favorite bands via YouTube, MySpace and other Internet portals?
It’s even too late for a red pill on this one!
